Self storage is a safe, secure and affordable way to store personal or business items. But, there are rare times when natural disasters or tragedy can strike a storage facility where you have placed your personal belongings. For added security, it is important to have some type of insurance, either via your current home or rental insurance, to cover when the unexpected happens.
Some, if not most homeowners or rental insurance policies do not cover items that are stored outside the home or apartment. It is crucial to check with your insurance provider about their self storage provisions in their policies before you rent a storage unit. If your insurance company does not cover your stored items, then it would be a good idea to get tenant insurance via your self storage facility. The tenant insurance policies are affordable and the cost can be built into your monthly rental payment. The added insurance will give you peace of mind that your belongings are covered while in storage.
Storage World and Storage World on Wheels offers tenant insurance through StorSmart Insurance. There are brochures and information at our 3 storage locations. The insurance will cover the value of the items insured at today’s value up to the amount of insurance coverage that is purchased. Tenant insurance does not cover flood damage or higher value items, such as jewelry, important documents, artwork, antiques, firearms or furs. However, the insurance does cover damage to the stored items from the following:
- Burglary (with a visible sign of forced entry)
- Building collapse
The claim process is simple and can be performed online or you can call a StorSmart representative at 888-545-SMART.
When renting a storage unit at Storage World, don’t forget to ask about our tenant insurance program to keep your belongings and business items safe and secure. Don’t take the chance that your belongings could get ruined from a natural disaster or other tragedy!
