2018 Memorial Day Events in Atlanta, Georgia

Memorial Day Atlanta

Memorial Day Weekend is considered the official start of the summer season. Around the country, people host parties or barbecues and get ready to welcome in the steamy, warmer weather. Plus, there are usually city ceremonies, festivals and other Memorial Day events taking place to celebrate the long weekend. Of course, you also can’t forget about all the big sales at retail stores and car dealerships!

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that Memorial Day is actually about more than barbecues and sales. It’s a day to honor those who have fallen while serving our country. Whatever your plans include this weekend, don’t forget to take part in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3pm, in which all Americans are asked to pause for a moment in an act of national unity.

Best Atlanta Bike Trails for Cycling Enthusiasts to Explore this Summer

man riding bikeThis is the time of year for bicycles to be taken out of bike storage and prepared to ride through the many amazing bike trails in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Featured below are four bike riding destinations in Atlanta that many cyclists will be exploring this summer. The four Atlanta bike trails of focus for today are Silver Comet Trail, Big Creek Greenway, Stone Mountain PATH and Suwanee Greenway.

Atlanta Bike Trails

Silver Comet Trail

The Sliver Comet Trail begins at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and the East-West Connector in Smyrna, Georgia and runs all the way to the Alabama border. There, it meets the Chief Ladiga trail in Alabama. A former rail line, the trail runs more than 60 miles through Atlanta forest, farmland, ravines and more before extending into Alabama. It features a gentle grade and scenic views all along the way and is a great destination for bike riding in Atlanta.

Big Creek Greenway

The Big Creek Greenway is a flat, winding trail with plenty of shade and is divided into two sections. The southern portion (Roswell/Alpharetta section) runs parallel to North Point Parkway. The northern portion, which begins north of Webb bridge, extends south 8.6 miles to a parking lot at Big Creek Park off Old Alabama Road near Holcomb Bridge Road in Fulton County. It is one of the best bike paths Atlanta offers, and with YMCA facilities along the way it can be a great pick for the whole family.

Stone Mountain PATH

The Stone Mountain Trail begins with the John Portman Cycle Track at Centennial Olympic Park. Then, this Atlanta bike trail continues across Piedmont Ave in downtown Atlanta, along the Freedom Parkway trail and ends at the loop around Stone Mountain. The 19-mile-long trail does require on-street travel for almost four miles, in Candler Park and through Clarkston. The trail connects downtown Atlanta to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Historic site, the Carter Center, Fernbank History Center, downtown Decatur, Stone Mountain Village, and Stone Mountain Memorial Park.

Suwanee Greenway

The multi-use Suwanee Creek Greenway offers a great bike riding experience in Atlanta. This bike path extends four miles along Suwanee Creek through forest and wetlands, with bike paths offering mostly solid surface for cyclists throughout. The greenway connects 400 acres of parkland with residential and commercial areas. Bike Riders in Atlanta can begin this trail at George Pierce Park on the northern end of Suwanee Creek Park at the southern end and pass through Martin Farm Park.

How to Save Room Over the Holidays with Self-Storage

The holidays tend to be a busy time as they bring parties, festive decorations, houseguests, presents and more. If the clutter is cramping your style, Storage World can lend a helping hand for the holidays.

Free Up a Guest Room with Holiday Storage

When family and friends visit this season, you might end up with more guests than your home can handle. If you have an exercise, activity or “junk” room, consider storing some or all of those items to make a temporary guest room. A few boxes here and there might not be a problem for the attic, basement or garage, but getting bigger, bulkier items up and down stairs or ladders can be difficult or downright dangerous!

A self-storage unit gives you more space and greater flexibility in how you store and organize your belongings. With units ranging in size from 5’ x 5’ all the way up to 10’ x 30’ (and with most units generally measuring 8’ in height), Storage World has a number of options for you in the Atlanta area.

Santa’s Little Helpers Can Use Holiday Self-Storage

It’s easy for jolly old Saint Nick to keep his presents a surprise until Christmas Day; they’re hidden away at the North Pole! If you need a hand keeping prying eyes off the prize inside of a package, an offsite storage location might be just the ticket. The gates are accessible from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week so you can store the holiday stash after a long day of shopping at Storage World.

Christmas Decoration Storage

Once the holidays are over, it’s time to stow away all of those lights, stockings, ornaments and other festive items. Take this opportunity to clear out broken items that cannot be repaired. Pack any delicate items carefully with tissue paper or bubble wrap and in separate containers whenever possible. You can organize items with storage bins or boxes to make next year’s setup even easier. Keeping an itemized list of each container’s contents is one gift you’ll be glad you gave yourself next winter! If you need a hand with packing and moving supplies , we can help.

Happy Holidays from Storage World in Atlanta, GA! Stop by any of our locations and let us assist you with your holiday self-storage (or more long-term) needs.

2016 Father’s Day Events in Atlanta, Georgia

Celebrate Father’s Day Atlanta Style

Although Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914, the idea of Father’s Day took a little longer to catch on. The general feeling back when the idea was first proposed in 1908 was that “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have”. A Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower and Civil War veteran disagreed with that opinion and worked to establish an equivalent of Mother’s Day for the fathers. Her idea slowly spread, but it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became an official holiday after a proclamation signed by Richard Nixon.

Today, there are an estimated 70 million dads across the United States. According to Pew Research, fathers now find it as challenging as women to balance work and family life, and want to play a more active role in their children’s lives. We honor these important figures in our lives every June on Father’s Day, a holiday created just for them. This year, Father’s Day takes place on Sunday, June 19th. If you’re wondering what to do to celebrate, here are just a sampling of the Father’s Day Events Atlanta, Georgia has in store for dear ole’ dad in 2016.
