Self Storage and Black Friday

Black Friday Shoppers

Thanksgiving is a day for us to give thanks, enjoy time with our family and friends, have great meals and cheer for our favorite football teams. It has also become a day to plan for your “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” and other holiday purchases. Black Friday is the “official” kick-off to the Christmas shopping season, even though some retailers are moving their opening hours to Thanksgiving evening. On average over 135 Million people go shopping on Black Friday spending billions of dollars. For many retailers, Black Friday is their busiest shopping day of the year! This year, the holiday shopping season is shorter at only four weeks!

The term “Black Friday” was first uttered by a Philadelphia policeman in 1966 to describe the large amount of shoppers that crowded the Philadelphia city center on the day after Thanksgiving. The name wasn’t widely adopted into the mainstream and the media until the 1980’s. At that time, economists helped put a spotlight on the term when they said that retail stores go “in the black” with their profits on the day after Thanksgiving. Today, “Black Friday” is seen as a day to get incredible bargains on electronics, toys and even clothing. Most retailers have already released their list of sale items, so shoppers can prepare their shopping strategies. There are some shoppers that started to camp out in front of Best Buy and other large retailers last week, so they could be the first in line! For shoppers who would much rather skip the crowds and shop online, there is “Cyber Monday”, which is one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. Retailers have also set specific deals for online shoppers on that day, including free shipping.

What does “Black Friday” or “Cyber Monday” have to do with self storage? Renting a self storage unit is a great solution for storing (or actually hiding gifts from snooping family members) your “Black Friday” purchases. Storage World offers month-to-month rental, which is perfect for storing your holiday purchases. A self storage unit is also a great place to store holiday decorations such as Christmas trees, lights, decorations and wreaths. Utilizing self storage for holiday decorations will help eliminate clutter after the holiday season is over.

Storage World’s offices will be closed for Thanksgiving starting Wednesday, November 27th at 1pm, but you will still be able to access your storage unit via gate-access Wednesday and on the holiday. The offices will re-open on Friday, November 29th at our normal hours just in time to you to store you great “Black Friday” finds! Storage World wishes everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program

Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program Thanksgiving Dinner

For this week’s blog post, we would like to shine the spotlight on another great community organization: Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program. The 501(c) (3) non-profit public charity was launched in 2010 by Roderick Cunningham to honor his late mother, Beverly, who was a victim of domestic violence. Beverly was a mother and day-care provider “whose love for children overflowed and touched the life of many others.” The mission of the organization is to provide advocacy and rehabilitation services to victims and survivors of domestic violence. The foundation is also an outlet for youth who are at risk of becoming victims of violence, substance abuse and impacted by health issues.

The Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program has many programs to help victims and survivors of domestic violence including individual and group counseling for domestic violence, financial literacy programs for teens to adults, specific counseling for the needs of children from young through teenagers and training for life skills such as job training and parenting.  The foundation sets up programs with local groups such as: Operation Hope, DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, SO Speak Out Productions, Safe Haven Transitional and Empower Success Today. Roderick Cunningham also reaches out to the community by being a member on local boards and coalitions such as the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Strengthening Families & Communities Coalition of American and the Georgia Department of Labor-DeKalb/Rockdale Employer Committee.

On November 16th, the Beverly Cunningham Outreach Program will be having its 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at This Is It BBQ & Seafood restaurant in Lithonia, Georgia from 1 to 4pm. This meal helps an estimated 150 children and immediate family members, who have been victims or who are survivors of domestic violence or are part of the underserved community. Storage World is honored to be a sponsor of this dinner. The dinner is provided from donations and the help of many volunteers. You can help the foundation by making a tax-deductible donation via their website or help sponsor community events such as the Thanksgiving dinner or “I am Cr8tive” Live concerts that are held throughout the year.

The foundation’s founder and executive directory, Roderick Cunningham, will be on the WATC 57 “Atlanta Live” show on December 11th from 7pm to 9pm to talk about various activities that the foundation sponsors in the community including the partnership with Partnership Against Domestic Violence, the Teen Dating Summit in February, 2014, the Teen Health Forum in March, 2014 and the 3rd Annual Holiday Giving for Children & Mothers in the DeKalb County School System. Mr. Cunningham will also be appearing on CNN in December to discuss the organization. The foundation continues to be involved in many activities to help those who are affected by domestic violence in the Atlanta area.

Veterans Day Celebrations

Happy Veterans Day

History of Veterans Day

Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day. It is a day set aside to honor the armed services veterans who have served our country and who are currently serving in the military in places around the world. Veterans Day officially started in 1954, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation to set aside a day to honor veterans of all wars. This was at a time when the United States was still recovering from World War II and the Korean War when many of our young men fought in battles around the world. Today, the day honors veterans from all wars and times of service in times of war and times of peace. The date of November 11th was picked as the day for Veterans Day because it is the day that the Allied Powers signed the cease-fire agreement with Germany ending World War I in 1918. The agreement was signed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Around the world, the day is called Remembrance Day.

Atlanta Veteran’s Day Parade

There are many community events and activities for honor veterans on November 11th. Check with your local community for wreath laying events or parades. The largest event in the Atlanta area is the 32nd Annual Atlanta Veterans Day Parade, which is being held on Saturday, November 9th. Downtown Atlanta will be transformed into a parade route for this day. The parade will step off at 11:11am at Peachtree Street S of Ralph McGill/Ivan Allen Blvd. You can see the route here. The parade is put on by the Georgia Veteran’s Day Parade Association of Atlanta. The paraded is funded by the variety of sponsors including Georgia Power, Lockheed Martin, Turner, Georgia Aquarium and more. The theme of this year’s parade is: “Honoring Korean War Veterans and all who preserved freedom.” There will be marching bands and military units, special dignitaries, and more. The Grand Marshal for the parade is Brigadier General Charles E. Getz.

Military Discounts at Local Attractions

Many Atlanta area attractions will be offering special military discounts for active and veteran service members and their families. The Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca Cola is offering discounts to active and retired military personnel. Local and national parks will have free admission for military members and veterans at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA  and Chattahoochee River National Park.

Storage World  salutes and honors our military veterans and current active duty military members. Storage World gives a 10% discount to active duty military personnel. We thank you for your service!

Begin Again Ministry

Begin Again Ministry

Storage World is continuing to put the spotlight on local business and community organizations that utilize our storage facilities. This month, we are focusing on Begin Again Ministry, which is based in Atlanta.

Begin Again Ministry was founded in April 2002 by Dr. Deborah Harrell Isom. The mission of the organization is “to eradicate homelessness through the spread of God’s Love.” Through the “Feed the Homeless Program”, Begin Again Ministry provides thousands of meals each year in the metro Atlanta area. According to Dr. Isom, “Up to 10,000 men, women and children become homeless in Atlanta communities every day!”

In 2012, the Begin Again Ministry served over 30,000 individual meals to Atlanta’s homeless, assisted 6 local ministries with thousands of pounds of food and provides food, clothing, toiletries and the word of God to 5 local homeless shelters and drug rehabilitation centers. The organization has set community meal schedules as well as provides food boxes on Wednesday and Fridays for the United Way. The following is the monthly meal schedule:

1st Friday of Each Month (At 6pm-8pm for homeless men, women and children)

3rd Thursday of Each Month
